First Indy Helps Balance Principal’s Checkbook

Actually, They Are Doubling It.

Ever heard of the Principal’s Checkbook? It’s a special fund Principals are able to use to help students in need and has been used to purchase things from new shoes, to warm clothes, to laundry detergent. These days, our schools do more than provide an education for our kids; they are also seen as a resource for food, health supplies, and sometimes basic necessities, which the Principal’s Checkbook helps provide.

This month, First Independent Bank will match, dollar for dollar, every donation made to the Evergreen Public School’s Principal’s Checkbook , up to $5,000. So make a donation, double your giving power and help people right here where you live.

For more information, visit First Independent Bank or Evergreen Public Schools.

Salmon Creek School is Cool

Actually, It Was On Fire.

I always thought Salmon Creek Elementary School was a cool place. Well, it turns out it was pretty hot early this morning!

There was a short in the electrical room, which caused a fire this morning at about 4 am. The school’s sprinkler system was activated and Clark County Fire District 6 firefighters were also on the scene. Damage was limited to the electrical room, and Vancouver Public Schools maintenance crews were working on getting everything back to normal.

So don’t worry, kids, everything will be fixed and cleaned up well before the first day of school!

Summertime Swimming at Klineline

No More Lifeguards on Duty.

The good news is that Klineline Pond at Salmon Creek Park will remain open for swimming this summer. The bad news is that due to budget cuts, there will no longer be lifeguards on duty. And, since one of the duties of the lifeguards was to also maintain the spray feature at the park, that will also be turned off this summer.

Salmon Creek Park, Klineline Pond, the picnic areas, playground and trails will all be open and available for summertime fun (now, we just need to get some summertime SUN!), but “swimmers, parents, and anyone planning a gathering will need to review water safety guidelines and pay attention to warning signs at the site”, said Pete Mayer, Vancouver-Parks and Rec Director.

I went to Klineline Pond last week (yes, we actually had a nice enough day to go swimming :-D ) and noticed that not only were there no lifeguards, but all the lifeguard towers have been removed as well.

Fairgrounds Community Park Dedication

Come Celebrate Clark County’s Newest Park!

Join your friends and neighbors for a special dedication event for the Fairgrounds Community Park (216 NW 164th St, Ridgefield) on Saturday May 22, at 10 am. Remember, we live in the beautiful, yet unpredictable, Pacific Northwest, and the ceremony will take place rain or shine. :-D

Approximately 30 acres of this 88 acre property was developed, and includes walking and biking trails, a playground, restrooms, covered picnic areas, basketball hoops, and great views!

Clark County Commissioner Tom Mielke will be making comments, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony, and light refreshments courtesy of some great local sponsors; including Albertsons, Burgerville (will this be a Nomad sighting?), the Fairgrounds Neighborhood Association, Edward Jones, Krispy Kreme, and Peet’s Coffe and Tea.

For more information, visit the Greater Clark Parks District online, or call 360-397-6118.

Statewide Earthquake Drill

Faultline, that is.  So, with all the shakin’ going on around the world, I guess we should be a little more aware.

WSU Vancouver is participating in the Statewide EARTHQUAKE DRILL scheduled for Wednesday, April 21 at 9:45 AM. The drill will be announced using the campus public address speakers and the emergency warning system. While Earthquake is the focus of the April Disaster Preparedness Month, our attention and commitment should be heightened by this year’s earthquake activity with loss of life and property in Haiti, Chili, and most recently, in California/Mexico.Upon hearing the announcement/alarm, please practice earthquake response by employing the “DROP, COVER, and HOLD earthquake survival mnemonic.

I didn’t even know there was a Statewide Earthquake Drill… did you?
