Klineline Kids Fish-In Event

Annual Event is Reel Fun.

The 11th Annual Klineline Pond Kids’ Fish-In Event is Saturday April 10, 2010.

Klineline Pond is stocked with thousands of trout to give kids the best chance possible of experiencing the “thrill of the catch”.  All fishing gear and bait will be provided, and each child will have the chance to catch, clean and keep up to two fish. While there is no guarantee of a catch, all kids will get a Fishing Kids T-Shirt, and get to keep the rod and reel they fished with!

The Salmon Creek Lions will be there giving out prizes for the best fish caught throughout the day and running the lunch counter. Registration deadline is April 2, 2010 and is by mail only.  Click for the 2010 Klineline Pond Kids’ Fish-In Event Registration, or call Dan Bodell (909-5256) if you are interested in volunteering at this event.

Are you hooked on fishing and wishing your kids were, too? Check out the advice from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to make your first fishing trips a success.

Walk There.

salmon_creekVancouver Parks and Rec, in partnership with the Portland Metro Council, will be giving away free pedometers and “Walk There” trail guides on Saturday, September 19 as part of an initiative to “encourage connectivity and awareness about the region’s trail systems.”

The walk will begin around 9 am at the Salmon Creek Sports Association Complex and head west to Cougar Creek and back, about 2.6 miles of easy walking on the paved trail. The wheelchair accessible trail winds through 850 acres of greenway, creeks, meadows and ponds and offers bird viewing as well as other wildlife, so bring your binoculars.

The Salmon Creek Sports Complex is located at 800 NE 117th Street.  For more information about this walk, call 360-619-1134.

Solve a Mystery with the StreamTeam!

What Was the Cause of Death?salmon-indian_web

After volunteers spend time planting trees and making sure the native saplings go into the ground correctly, volunteers are needed to spend a day with the StreamTeam to make sure the trees survive.

Improve your native plant identification skills while learning how to monitor a native tree planting!  StreamTeam members will sleuth their way through a yearling planting to find who is the caper.  Was it deer in the wetland with improper tube placement?  You be the judge!

On Saturday, September 12, 2009 from 8:45 to 1 pm, the team will head out into the field to gauge the success of StreamTeam plantings.  Monitors will collect important data.  Volunteers are a major part of the scientific process!

Please contact Lisa Beranek at (360) 992-8585 for more information or to register.  Once you register you will receive meeting time and location.

Okay to Spray, But Not Splash.

Update 8/21/09: Klineline Pond OK for Swimming!

Klineline Pond at Salmon Creek Greenway has been closed to swimmers today, August 18, by the Health Department due to high levels E-coli.  The spray park at Klineline Pond is still safe to use as its water does not come from the pond and is chlorinated to kill bacteria. So, while the picnic areas and spray park are open for use, the pond is off limits.

Another test is scheduled for Wednesday, with updates available Thursday or Friday. Let’s keep out fingers crossed.

Just last month, Vancouver Lake was also closed to swimmers due to E-coli and Algae Bloom, and is still closed.

Hazel Dell Lanes

Where Strike Three is a Good Thing.

bowlingHazel Dell Lanes has a Super Sunday Special: Bowling is $1.50 a game, Shoe Rentals are $1.50, and the Restaurant has items for (you guessed it) $1.50.  The Lanes open at 8 am and close at 10 pm on Sundays.  Great Family Fun.

Cant’ bowl on Sunday?  Check out the Hazel Dell Lanes website for their Monday through Friday Specials, and Senior Specials, too.

They also have Youth Programs available.  There is a Youth Bowling League on Saturdays from 9 am to noon.  Sign ups are Saturday August 29th from 9:30 am to 11:30 am.  There is also After School Bowling on Wednesdays and Home School Bowling on Tuesdays.  I really like the fact that all the Junior Coaches and Staff have been certified as Volunteers; meaning they all had to pass a background check.

Yes, I am aware that Hazel Dell is not in Salmon Creek, but we are neighbors.  And Salmon Creek does not have a Bowling Alley that I know of.

Skyview Girls Soccer Camp

Those Who Have Talent Are Good.  Those Who Practice Are Great.soccer-ball_web

The Skyview Storm Girls Soccer Team is having their 1st Annual Girls Soccer Camp August 18th-20th from 9:00 to 11:30.  The camp is geared for girls entering First through Eighth Grade.

Current and former Skyview Soccer Players (Greater St. Helens League Champions 2006, 2007, 2008) will be running and coaching the camp.  Girls will receive both individual and team instruction appropriate to their age level.  There will be games and activities, as well as team competitions.

The goal is for the girls to improve their skills and knowledge of the game, while having fun and making new friends.

The cost is $55 per player ($45 for the second player per family) and the funds raised will go towards new uniforms and equipment.  Click for Registration Form and more information.

Pizza and Fair Tickets

Papa Murphy’s Salmon Creek Has Fair Tickets.tickets_web

Looking for a place to buy your Clark County Fair Discounted Tickets?

Papa Murphy’s in Salmon Creek (the one by Fred Meyer) has discounted Fair Tickets on sale!

I’m all for saving money, and time (the fewer stops I have to make the better), so being able to pick up some cheap Fair tickets as I’m picking up my Cowboy (pizza, that is) is great for me.

Now I just have to remember where I put them!

4th of July at Fort Vancouver

Not in 2009.fort-vancouver

Happy 4th of July to all our friends and fellow Americans in Salmon Creek, across America, and around the world.

It will be a strange 4th of July here in Vancouver, WA as the Fort Vancouver Fireworks Celebration has been cancelled this year for the first time since 1963 due to lack of funds.  The Fort will still be open for picnics and BBQ’s, but no personal fireworks are allowed.

I grew up here, and for as long as I can remember, it was our family tradition to go down to the Fort every 4th of July for the show.  I always remember my dad proudly proclaiming, “The largest fireworks show West of the Mississippi!”  Not sure where he got that information, but I believed it.

The plan is to have the show again in 2010, so we hope to see there next year, and be safe.

Living on the EDGE

Salmon Creek’s Camp EDGE, that is.
