First Indy Helps Balance Principal’s Checkbook

Actually, They Are Doubling It.
Ever heard of the Principal’s Checkbook? It’s a special fund Principals are able to use to help students in need and has been used to purchase things from new shoes, to warm clothes, to laundry detergent. These days, our schools do more than provide an education for our kids; they are also seen as a resource for food, health supplies, and sometimes basic necessities, which the Principal’s Checkbook helps provide.
This month, First Independent Bank will match, dollar for dollar, every donation made to the Evergreen Public School’s Principal’s Checkbook , up to $5,000. So make a donation, double your giving power and help people right here where you live.
For more information, visit First Independent Bank or Evergreen Public Schools.

Welcome Back Teacher Breakfast
August 30, 2010 by Melanie

Hmm, are They Serving Green Eggs and Ham?
No, no Green Eggs and Ham for our teachers for breakfast (that is saved for our first graders later on in the year!)
The first day of school for Salmon Creek Elementary School students is Wednesday, September 8, 2010; but the first day back to school for Salmon Creek Elementary School teachers is Thursday, September 2, 2010.
The Salmon Creek PTA is planning a back to school breakfast for our wonderful teachers at 8 am. We’ll have some new teachers, as well as a new principal, to welcome back to school this year and are looking for some volunteers to help with food and drinks. The plan is to keep it simple for all involved: bagels, pastries, fruit, juice, etc. Can you help?
Please contact Christa Lawson ( kcplawson@comcast.net) for specifics, and thanks for helping make back to school fun for all! By the way, don’t forget about our Back to School Social on Tuesday, September 7 for students and parents!

Fresh from the Battle Ground Barkery.
Do you have a dog, or know someone who does? Then you will want to check out the Battle Ground Barkery for some yummy treats, Doggie Biscotti, for Fido! These biscuits contain no wheat, are all natural, and have no preservatives.
Doggie Biscotti is made by students with disabilities at Battle Ground High School as part of their vocational training. Students make the dough, roll it, cut them out in the shape of a dog bone, bake and then package them. They send them to “Futures,” a Community Based Transition program for students, ages 18-21. These students market the product and deliver to customers in the community. This is a wonderful partnership, providing skills and job opportunities for students with disabilities as well as a quality product.
You can buy Doggie Biscotti in bulk direct from the Battle Ground Barkery (20 Bags of 10 Biscuits each for $20) or from local retailers and businesses (click here for Battle Ground Barkery Partnerships). Proceeds of the “Doggie Biscotti” are used to support vocational training programs at Battle Ground High School in Battle Ground, Washington.
Biscuit hours are Monday through Thursday from 7:30 to 2:00. Call 360-600-7026 for more information.

Smokey’s School Supply Drive

Benefiting Our Local Schools.
Need an excuse to go to Smokey’s Hot Oven Pizza (besides the awesome jo-jos, my favorite!) ? Well, how about this one…you want to help out our local school-aged kids.
It’s almost back to school time, and there are a lot of local families that are struggling to send their kids back to school with the supplies they need. If you can, pick up a few school supplies (most of the stores have lists of needed supplies), but most basic needs are backpacks, #2 pencils, colored pencils, crayons, erasers, glue sticks, safety scissors, and paper (both spiral bound and filler). Then head on over to Smokey’s and drop them off in the big box at either location.
While you’re there, might as well stay for lunch or dinner! Smokey’s Hot Oven Pizza offers Fish ‘n Chips, Chicken, Jo-Jo’s, Salads, Nachos, and of course, Pizza! Visit either the Hazel Dell location (6920 NE Hwy 99) or the Orchards location (10411 NE Fourth Plain). And, on Mondays Kids Eat Free (see store for details).

For Wolfpups, of Course!
Ahh, the first day of school; fresh faces, new pencils and erasers, crisp, clean notebooks and a nice backpack to carry all those supplies in. Unfortunately, that is not the situation for many kids returning to school this year. Budgets have been cut in both homes and schools and many children will lack the basic tools necessary for successful learning without our help.
CrossWay Church in Salmon Creek wants to remedy this situation. They are having a school supply drive, going on now, with the goal of providing 25-30 backpacks and required school supplies to Chinook Elementary (and others if we get more supplies) by September 4; enough time for the staff to distribute them to needy families before the first day of school (which is September 8 for the Vancouver School District).
You can drop off school supply donations at donation boxes at the Salmon Creek Farmer’s Market entrance and Barnyard: Family Fun Zone or at CrossWay’s Church office (1308 NE 134th St Suite G). If you come to the office, please use the door at the back of the building. Please contact Pastor Brad for more information. He can be reached by phone (360) 828-1633 or email brad@crosswaychurchwa.com.
I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be

Who’s Your Teacher?
Here’s your chance to find out who your (and your friends’) teacher is! Both Chinook Elementary and Salmon Creek Elementary Schools will be holding their “Welcome Back to School” Socials on Tuesday, September 7th from 5 to 6 pm.
This is a great time to see old friends, make new friends, meet your teacher, stash your stuff in your classroom, and have a cool treat. Parents will also have the opportunity for fun stuff like signing up for PTA/PTSA and purchasing lunch tickets. Salmon Creek students and parents will also be able to meet their new Principal, Mrs. Darci Fronk.
Then, it’s Back to School on September 8, 2010!

Copacabana Time at WSU Vancouver.
Pack a picnic, bring your blanket and settle in for an evening of entertainment at a free outdoor concert Friday, August 27 at 6 pm in WSU Vancouver’s amphitheater. Everyone is welcome, and admission and parking are free.
Local favorite Pepe & the Bottle Blondes will spice up the evening. The Copacabana-style band combines an eclectic ensemble of saxophones, trumpets, congas and percussion with bold singing by Pepe and silky harmonies by his back-up blondes. Pepe & the Bottle Blondes successfully blend dance, opera and musical theater with original songwriting and comedic wit to deliver a fresh and innovative experience.
The visually arresting performances of Pepe & the Bottle Blondes are enhanced with extravagant costumes and makeup that echo the indulgence and glamour of a 1950s nightclub. Their repertoire includes popular songs from the 30s to the 60s, a strong selection of tangos, boleros, rumbas, sambas and many other Latin-American rhythms.
Pepe & the Bottle Blondes have performed in San Francisco, Seattle and Los Angeles. Pepe has sung in Madrid, Paris and Las Vegas, including appearances with Pink Martini at the Cannes Film Festival and with the Oregon Symphony.
