Registration Begins for the 2010-2011 School Year.

Any child who becomes five years of age on or before August 31 may enter Kindergarten.  That’s the easy part.

You can register your child at your local school beginning April 6, 2010, proof of birth date and immunization records are required.  Not sure which school boundary you are in? Check out the school boundary map, or call the office of elementary education at 313-1010.

Interested in full day kindergarten or one of the dual language kindergarten programs? Check out the Vancouver School District’s Kindergarten Information page.

Register by May 1 to ensure your child receives an invitation to attend Kindergarten visitation this Spring. Chinook Elementary will have their Kindergarten visitation May 26; Salmon Creek Elementary will be May 29.

The Wheels on the Bus…school_bus

Bus Ridership Week is this week, October 5-9, 2009 for the Vancouver School District.  If you have a child in the Vancouver School District that rides the bus to and from school, it is especially important that he/she does so during Bus Ridership Week.  The state reimburses the school district for some of the cost of operating their bus fleet based on the number of students who ride the bus during the week of Oct. 5–9.  The district owns and operates 132 school buses and completes 780 runs per day.

Salmon Creek Parents Go Back to Middle School.

alkibannerIf you have a child attending Alki Middle School, mark your calendar for Wednesday October 21, 2009 for the annual, ever popular “Inside Alki”.  This is a day where parents are invited to attend classes with their child and experience Middle School all over again!  :-)

Seriously though, Inside Alki is a great way to see first hand the great teaching that goes on at Alki, and gain a better understanding of your child’s day at school.  Parents are invited to come for all, or part of, the day (and it’s a two hour early release day!) and have the opportunity to give a written “Way to Go” to the teachers there.

And remember, Parent/Teacher Conferences are coming up October 22nd and 23rd.  Coincidence?

Chinook Elementary School Supply Drive

Help Kids and Teachers Start the Year Right.

pencilsAhh, the first day of school; fresh faces, new pencils and erasers, crisp, clean notebooks and a nice backpack to carry all those supplies in.  Unfortunately, that is not the situation for many kids returning to school this year.  Budgets have been cut in both homes and schools and many children will lack the basic tools necessary for successful learning without our help.

CrossWay Church in Salmon Creek wants to remedy this situation.  They are having a school supply drive, going on now, with the goal of providing 25-30 backpacks and required school supplies to Chinook Elementary by September 4; enough time for the staff to distribute them to needy families before the first day of school (which is September 9 for the Vancouver School District).

Please contact Pastor Brad for more information or to schedule drop off or pick up of school supply donations.  He can be reached by phone (360) 828-1633 or email brad@crosswaychurchwa.com.

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be

The weather couldn’t have been better for the first day of the Skyview Girls Soccer Team Soccer Camp this morning, as over 60 girls showed up to learn the game from the players themselves.

“It was Awesome!” “I learned a lot.” “I’m sweaty!”, were just a few of the comments from participants after practice was over.
