Cold, wet, rainy, snowy…must be time for Baseball! Well, time to get signed up for baseball or softball!

Registration for the Spring 2012 Baseball and Softball season are currently underway. In person registrations will take place Wednesday, January 18, 2012 between 5pm and 8pm, and Tuesday, January 24, 2012 between 5 pm and 8 pm at the Salmon Creek Round Table Pizza (13009 NE Hwy 99). You can also register online at Salmon Creek Little League. All players must be 5 years old by April 30, 2012; a Birth Certificate will be required for all new players.

Opening Day Ceremonies and Games will take place at the new Luke Jensen Sports Park on Saturday, March 17, 2012!

Saturday night is a great time to chill out with friends, and watching the season home opener of the Vancouver Victory Hockey Club is a great way to do it! This Saturday, November 12, 2011 the Vancouver Victory will take on the Yellowstone Quake at Mountain View Ice Arena (14313 SE Mill Plain) at 7:00 pm.

If you haven’t been to a hockey game before, it is a fast paced, full contact sport. While the point of the game is to get a small rubber puck into your opponents goal, “quite a bit of the game revolves around the physical contact between the players. Skate blades, hockey sticks, shoulders, hips, and hockey pucks all contribute.”

Head Coach John Nogatch is not only driven to win, but to instill winning ways with the Vancouver Victory Hockey Club. “Our team will be a big part of the Vancouver community. Our players will be expected to be involved in community projects. It is our responsibility as a hockey program.”

The Vancouver Victory (formerly the River City Jaguars) are a Tier III hockey team and members of  Northern Pacific Junior Hockey League. They will play all home games at Mountain View Ice Arena. Visit the Vancouver Victory for more information about games, tickets and general information.

The Second Annual Vancouver USA Marathon will take place Sunday, June 17, 2012; and that means What? events are already up and running!

What? That’s right, What? events are the Vancouver USA Marathon “pre-functions” that take place monthly (usually on a Wednesday evening) where you can get together and meet others who are training to run, or walk, the Vancouver USA Marathon. These run/walks are free and are a great opportunity to run a portion of the course, get some free stuff, a free beer, discounts on Pasta and/or Happy Hour, and hang out with other cool people who are also training.

The running routes and restaurant change each month, but will begin at 6 pm, prizes at 7 pm and wrap up by 8:30. Sign ups begin around 5:30 and the first 10 people receive a free Vancouver USA Marathon Training shirt! Speaking of free…during the month of October, when you register for either the Vancouver USA Marathon or Half Marathon, you will receive a free entry for the Fort Vancouver Run in March 2012.

The Rotary’s Max Muscle Triathlon will take place Sunday, September 11, 2011 starting at Salmon Creek Park/Klineline Pond. Proceeds will go to support the Rotary’s fight to end Polio.

A triathlon is a combination of three sports: swimming, biking and running. It was created more than 20 years ago and is one of the hottest sports in the US. Now is your chance to take part in a triathlon right here in Clark County. Swim in the Klineline Pond, ride your bike along the beautiful hills of Salmon Creek, Felida and even part of Ridgefield, and run along the Salmon Creek Trail.

This is a perfect triathlon for all levels, with five different events being offered: Tri-it (325m swim, 12 mile bike ride, 5k run), Sprint Tri (750m swim, 12 mile bike ride, 5k run), Olympic Tri (1.5k sim, 24 mile bike ride, 10k run), Sprint Du (12 mile bike ride, 5 k run) and Olympic Du (24 mile bike ride, 10k run). A beautiful course, goodies, finishers medals, awards, vendors and great support all make this a fun event.

Join the Clark County Fire and Rescue Firefighters Association for the 7th Annual Memorial Golf Tournament on September 11, 2011 at the Lewis River Golf Course (3209 Lewis River Rd, Woodland).

The 7th Annual K-Rod 10KRun/5K Run & Walk began as the Kalani Rodrigues Memorial Scholarship Run to bring awareness to cancer while benefiting student-athlete scholarships at Clark College and will take place this year on Sunday, September 25, 2011.

Run or walk the 5K, or run the 10K course through Downtown Vancouver, along the Columbia River, through the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, and around the Clark College campus. This is a timed event, and this year runners can take advantage of Chip Timing managed by Race Northwest.

Pre-register for the event and you are invited to a post race Luau courtesy of the Penguin Athletic Club and community partners, including Advocare, Alpha Graphics, Bamboo Grove Hawaiian Grille, Fishead, Fit Right Northwest, Heritage Bank, Hula Boy Charbroil, LA Fitness, Noho’s Hawaiian Café, Nutter Corporation, Race Northwest and Tommy O’s.

Kalani lived his life celebrating health and fitness, was a 4.0 student and an award-winning track star at Clark College. In late summer 2004 he envisioned a community run/walk event to bring awareness to brain cancer and its treatment. “By December 2004, after his 13 month struggle against the disease, Kalani succumbed at the young and promising age of 21. His desire to see an event that would call attention brain cancer would be picked up by a dedicated group of family, friends and community volunteers.”

Remember your first bike? Help another child experience the thrill of owning their first bike by donating old, unused bikes at the Community Cycling Center Bike Drive being held at the Salmon Creek Fred Meyer (800 NE Tenney Rd) on Saturday, August 27, 2011 between 10 am and 2 pm.

“When you donate a bike, the Community Cycling Center’s professional mechanics will refurbish it and direct it to earn-a-bike programs for financially restricted adults and youth. Some bicycles are sold in the bike shop to fund their community programs. They are particularly in need of  adult road bikes and kids bikes with 20″ wheels. All donations are tax deductible.”

Do you like to play, or watch, basketball? Enjoy spending time on our beautiful Columbia River on a sunny August afternoon? Then mark your calendars for August 19-21, 2011, ‘cuz it’s time for Hoops on the River!

Hoops on the River, in partnership with the Vancouver Volcanoes, is a two day, three on three basketball tournament open to all interested basketball players, youth to adult, beginner to experienced. The tournament will be played at Vancouver Landing (110 Columbia Street, next to the Quay Restaurant & Bar), along the Columbia River. Team divisions include: Elite 6′ and Over, Elite 6′ and Under, Elite Women, Co-Ed, Youth (1st Grade and older), Wheelchair and Special Olympics. Deadline for team entry extended to August 15, 2011!

Looking for a little extra competition? On Saturday, August 2o, individuals may register to compete in the Three Point Shootout or the Slam Dunk Contest.  Also included in your registration is an invitation to attend a free Kids Clinic on Friday August 19 from 2 to 4 pm sponsored by Concordia University. Instruction will include basketball fundamentals such as shooting, ball handling and defensive skills.

Now in its sixth year, Hoops on the River is a charity tournament organized by Susan Oberst of Share Vancouver, along with the help of many generous donors and incredible volunteers, to help the hungry and homeless in Clark County. Registration is now open, so gather up your friends, get a team together and join the fun for a good cause!
