Recently, the North Salmon Creek Neighborhood Association expressed concern about the proposed Nobel Meadows subdivision and the negative impacts it would have on our existing community. Below is a copy of the letter NSCNA submitted to the Clark County Board of Commissioners.

Honorable Commissioners:

The North Salmon Creek Neighborhood would like to bring concerns to your attention that may have significant detrimental impact on our community.

We have two areas of concern with the proposed Nobel Meadows Planned Unit Development: traffic impacts and environmental. The neighborhood has brought traffic concerns to The County’s attention several times over the last few years. These concerns have only escalated with each development without relief offered. About a third of our community is land locked with limited ingress / egress primarily via 10th Avenue. It is not unusual during a prime time commute to take 20 minutes to traverse less than two miles from the I-205 exit to this area. The planned relocation of the transit mall to 10th Avenue will only extend this travel interval.

From the neighborhood perspective the two projects aimed at bringing relief to the traffic problems hold no respite for us. The proposed project to widen 10th Avenue provides no real relief – because there isn’t a net gain of traffic lanes. The traffic light synchronization project has yet to provide any discernible difference. We understand that a study has been conducted to ensure the wetland and habitats are not significantly impacted. Neighbors must question this finding given that a significant wetland area, encompassing a tributary from Whipple Creek, and at least two springs reside on this property. Additionally, black tail deer, coyotes, beaver, woodpeckers, and other wildlife reside in the area while bald eagles overfly the area and land in its trees. Encroachment would definitely alter the flavor of this neighborhood and place these species at greater risk.

We would appreciate your thoughtful consideration of these issues when rendering a final decision on this proposed project.

Linda Franklin, Clark County Assessor, will speak at the North Salmon Creek Neighborhood Association General meeting on Tuesday March 23.  Franklin will speak on a variety of programs supported by her office, as well as answer questions and concerns that residents may have about property valuations and assessments.

This is an excellent opportunity to directly interact with your elected officials and discuss issues that are near and dear to your heart – and your wallet.

Almost-two-year-old Bridger wasn’t waiting for Santa to make his Christmas wishes at the Crystal Plum Bazaar at Alki Middle School in Salmon Creek.

Shop Till You Drop Camp.

Kids Club Fun and Fitness in Salmon Creek is having a Shop Till U Drop Camp for kids (ages 4-12) on Black Friday, November 27, 2009 from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm.

Drop the kids off and let them have fun; swimming (1st-5th Graders), Gymnastics, Arts and Crafts, Jungle Playland and more, while you have fun shopping, or just relaxing!

Come to the Infertility Support Group on the first Wednesday of each month (next meeting is December 2, 2009) from 7:30 to 9:00 pm, located in Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital Conference Room B (Third Floor).  This group was established by CrossWay Church in Salmon Creek, as a safe place for group members to share their hurts, dreams, fears, doubts, and joys; and is based on Christian perspective, but everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate.

Alki Plays in Championship Game.

Update: Alki wins! 18 to 6, Way to go Wolves!!

Good Luck Alki Eighth Grade Football! They will be playing in the Vancouver School District Middle School Football Championship Game on Wednesday, October 21st, 6:00 pm at Kiggins Bowl against Jason Lee.

It’s been an exciting season to watch, with five wins and one loss; with Jason Lee being the only school to beat the wolves! So come on out and cheer our boys as they take on the Panthers!

Update: County Commissioners have scheduled a public hearing on the proposed changes on December 8, 10 am at the Public Service Center (1300 Franklin Street).

Clark County Public Works will be holding an Open House for public input in regards to restricting parking in the Mt. Vista neighborhood by WSU in Salmon Creek.

In 2008, a group of residents North and West of the WSU Vancouver campus asked the county to restrict on-street parking. Surveys conducted in spring 2009 showed that a majority of residents living on Northeast 147th, 148th and 150th streets and 26th Avenue favored the change.

If approved, the county would restrict on-street parking along Northeast 147th, 148th and 150th streets between 29th and 26th avenues, and on Northeast 26th Avenue between 147th and 148th streets. The restrictions would occur Mondays through Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Other roads north of Northeast 150th Street could also be affected.

If you want to be heard, or want to hear what others are saying,  the meeting will be Tuesday, August 11, 6-8 pm at the Clark County Sheriff’s Office West Precinct classroom, 505 NW 179th St., in Ridgefield.
