Can Dogs Help Kids Read?

reading-dogApparently so.  Studies show that reading aloud can help reading comprehension, and reading to a dog seems to be less intimidating than reading to a person.  CBS News aired a short news story on this, “Can Dogs Teach Kids to Read?

Three Creeks Library in Salmon Creek has a Read to the Dogs event scheduled for Wednesday, October 21st from 5 to 7 pm for children ages five to twelve.

Registration begins October 14th.  Call Three Creeks Library at (360) 571-9696.

Salmon Creek Parents Go Back to Middle School.

alkibannerIf you have a child attending Alki Middle School, mark your calendar for Wednesday October 21, 2009 for the annual, ever popular “Inside Alki”.  This is a day where parents are invited to attend classes with their child and experience Middle School all over again!  :-)

Seriously though, Inside Alki is a great way to see first hand the great teaching that goes on at Alki, and gain a better understanding of your child’s day at school.  Parents are invited to come for all, or part of, the day (and it’s a two hour early release day!) and have the opportunity to give a written “Way to Go” to the teachers there.

And remember, Parent/Teacher Conferences are coming up October 22nd and 23rd.  Coincidence?

No Meeting for NSCNA in August.

house_clip_art_webJust a reminder, there will be no North Salmon Creek Neighborhood Association (NSCNA)  Meeting in August.  The next meeting will be September 22, 7 pm at the Three Creeks Library in Salmon Creek.

One thing to start thinking about is the election of next year’s officers coming up in November.  The position of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer all have one year terms, with a maximum of two years in the same office.  As our current President, Barbara,  has held her position for the maximum amount of time, we will definitely need a candidate for that office.

If you have any questions, you can call any of the current officers.  Please visit the NSCNA website for contact information.

Klineline’s Annual Fishing Kids Event

Catch a Fish, or Two.

It’s almost time for the 10th Annual Fishing Kids Event at Klineline Pond at Salmon Creek Park.  Registration is by mail only and must be received by April 10 for the April 18, 2009  event.kid-fishing

What is Fishing Kids?  Well, it’s a day of fishing fun for kids and their families.  Kids will be given a Zebco rod and reel to fish with, get the chance to catch, clean and keep a couple of fish, and get a commemorative Fishing Kids T-shirt.  They also get to keep the rod and reel they fish with.

If you have never been to a Fishing Kids Event, here is how the day will go.  When you register, you will be given a time slot to fish.  As all fishing gear and bait is provided, so no personal fishing gear is allowed.  Families may go to the fishing spot of their choice, and while parents are encouraged to help their kids fish, the kids should actually be doing the fishing. 8-)

Once the limit of two fish is caught, kids will move over to the measuring and cleaning stations.  No catch and release is allowed!

What’s the catch?  Well, like I said, pre-registration is required, and it is limited to the first 1200 kids (ages 5-14).  For more information on youth fishing, visit the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife; or click for Klineline Kids Fishing Event Registration Application.
