Pancakes for breakfast sounds good, right? Well, then pancakes for breakfast that raises funds for a local neighborhood holiday celebration sounds even better!

The Salmon Creek Applebee’s (13006 NE Hwy 99) will be hosting a Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser on Saturday, November 19, 2011 between 8am and 10am. You can also bid on items during the silent auction between 8-9:30am.

Tickets are $7 each, and the funds raised will go towards hosting a holiday celebration for local kids that might not otherwise have one. Tickets can be purchased at Riverview Community Bank in Salmon Creek (800 NE Tenney Rd) or Riverview Community Bank in Hazel Dell (1220 NE 88th St).

A Book and Toy Barrel will also be on site, so please bring in a donation if you can.

The 12th Annual Klineline Kids Fishing Event is set for April 9, 2011 at Klineline Pond, Salmon Creek Park. Over 1,500 children ages 5-14, along with their parents, are expected to attend and will have the opportunity to experience and learn about the sport of fishing.

The Klineline Kids Fishing Event is about more than just a fun day of fishing; it’s about introducing the kids to the sport of fishing as an individual and family activity and a way to become more aware of our natural resources. Presented by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife and Klineline Kids Fishing, this program gives kids an opportunity to experience the thrill of catching a fish as well as connecting youth to the outdoors.

This year, Klineline Kids Fishing, a partner with the non-profit organization Go Play Outside Alliance of Washington (GoPaw), is asking for your support in putting together this worthwhile event at Klineline Pond. For a donation of $250 or more, your business logo will be printed on the back of every child’s T-shirt, and space will be provided at the event to hang your banner.

Texting and Driving Laws went into effect in Washington State almost two years ago; and in June of this year, texting or talking on a cell phone while driving became primary offenses. So, just how difficult is it to text and drive?

Heritage High School DECA students want to find out.

Heritage High School DECA students have learned that texting and driving in the state of Washington is a growing issue. Worse, teens have been the victims of several catastrophes. In response, the school’s DECA chapter is hosting the TTYL GTG DRV (talk to you later, got to go drive) campaign which will be held Saturday, November 20th between 10 am and 3 pm at the Heritage High School student parking lot (7825 NE 130th Ave, Vancouver).

The Heritage DECA students are determined to help raise awareness of the dangers of texting and driving. Students will drive golf carts through an obstacle course marked by traffic cones while texting with a nearby designated student/texter. This is a free event that will go on rain or shine and is open to anyone in the public, ages 15 or older.

The students’ goal in running the campaign and hosting the TTYL GTG DRV event on November 20th is to raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving to high school students, their parents and the community. They also plan to gather statistics on how each driver does while completing the course and texting.

Let’s not have today become the forgotten holiday. It is imperative that we share the stories of the sacrifices of those who have gone before us with those who come after us. When I think about it, our ability to maintain this site, to speak my mind, to even live as I choose, is a result of the sacrifices made by those before me who stood firm in support of our country and our freedoms.

Too many people died face down in the mud so we could live our lives in freedom. Sure, there are days when we may be frustrated with work or our government leaders or other complexities of life; but we live in a country where we have freedoms that billions of others world-wide only long for. When you think of that, it provides more meaning to the day. During a family discussion a few years ago about the reality of what today meant, especially to our kids (besides a mid-week day out of school), my then ten year old son shared this poem he had written.

V – Victorious soldiers leave the war

E – Eleventh day, hour and month

T – Together, America stands

E – Even in Iraq

R – Ready we are; again and again

A – Another soldier home; hooray, hooray

N – No more war to come near

S – So long war, so long.

The original, hand scrawled, poem (in the best handwriting a 10 year old boy can muster) still hangs proudly on our wall to this day.

Now here is a way to work up your appetite for Thanksgiving Dinner!  The Turkey Trot, a family friendly fun run Thanksgiving morning, November 25, 2010, starting at 9 am.

The  Turkey Trot is a family-friendly 5K Run/Walk or 10K Run along the beautiful Salmon Creek Trail, starting and ending at Klineline Pond in Vancouver, WA.  Participants can trot at their own pace (and distance) and even bring along their dogs!  For those daring enough to take the plunge, there will be a Polar Bear Swim at Klineline Pond after the race.  There is even going to be a pinata for the kids!

While there is no registration fee for the Turkey Trot, all participants are encouraged to donate to the Principal’s Checkbook — a local program that helps disadvantaged kids in our schools. ” Just show up on race day. Put on your shoes and get out there and do the 5K or 10K. We’ll treat you with respect, report your time, count you as a winner. But if you can give, do give. And if you are able to give the minimum of $15, we’ll even set you up with a race T-shirt plus whatever else we can obtain from local sponsors. But don’t stop at $15. Give more. You are directly helping kids in our schools. The money (all of it) goes straight to the school targeting the truly underprivileged. Nobody takes a cut and makes something. Just the kids. So, give $20 or $30 or whatever you can. If you don’t have it, come out and race anyhow. We are glad to just see you on Thanksgiving Morning!” ~ Excerpt from the Clark County Turkey Trot Blog.

Join your friends and neighbors at the Tenth Annual Open House and Safety Fair on Saturday, September 18th. The fun starts at noon and lasts until 4 pm at the Public Safety Complex – 505 NW 179th Street (located by the Fairgrounds). This Complex houses the Clark County Sheriff’s Office West Precinct, the Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office and a volunteer fire station shared by Fire Districts 6, 11, & 12.

Meet your local law enforcement, check out community exhibits, emergency vehicles will be on display, and demonstrations throughout the day. You (and the kids) can enjoy free face painting, child ID and fingerprinting, a bounce house, and the Jr. Firefighter challenge. They will also be serving up hot dogs, chips, pop, and popcorn.

Crossway Church in Salmon Creek is offering a Kids Summer Soccer Camp at Salmon Creek School Wednesday, July 21 through Friday, July 23 for boys and girls in grades First through Fifth.
